BECKLEY, W.VA.- A 41-year-old Crab Orchard, West Virginia, woman could be spending up to 40 years in federal prison when she is sentenced in November 2025, after pleading guilty on Tuesday, to a federal drug crime.
According to Acting U.S. Attorney Lisa G. Johnston, on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, Carey Ann Trotter, also known as “Carey Ann Metz-Wood,” 41, of Crab Orchard, West Virginia, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia and pleaded guilty before U.S. Magistrate Judge Omar J. Aboulhosn to Aiding and Abetting Possession with Intent to Distribute 5 Grams or More of a Controlled Substance, Methamphetamine.
Following entering her guilty plea on Tuesday, Judge Aboulhosn accepted Trotter’s guilty plea and scheduled sentencing for November 7, 2025. At that time, Trotter faces a mandatory minimum of five years and a maximum of 40 years in federal prison, as well as at least four years of supervised release and a fine of up to $5 million.
According To Court Documents And Statements Made In Court
According to charging documents and statements made during Tuesday’s plea allocation, on July 1, 2024, Trotter possessed around 10.51 grams of methamphetamine and a total of nearly 26 grams of para-fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid, contained in several small packages. Trotter admitted in court that she intended to use some of the controlled substances and aid and abet another individual in the possession and distribution of the substances.
Trotter further admitted to possessing a Glock .45-caliber handgun, a CBC .17-caliber rifle, and a 26-round high-capacity magazine for .45-caliber ammunition. Federal law prohibits a person with a prior felony conviction from owning or possessing a firearm and ammunition. Trotter knew that when she possessed the firearms and ammunition, she was a prohibited person, due to a prior felony conviction for delivery of oxycodone in Raleigh County Circuit Court in January of 2017.
Trotter’s co-defendant Joshua Mason Trotter, 44, also of Crab Orchard, West Virginia, pleaded guilty on May 27, 2025, to being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. Joshua Trotter admitted to possessing a Glock .45-caliber handgun and a CBC .17-caliber rifle on July 1, 2024. He has been scheduled to be sentenced on September 26, 2025. At that time, he faces a maximum of 15 years in federal prison.
Acting U.S. Attorney Johnston commended the investigative work of the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, which led to the Trotters’ guilty pleas.
