Charleston Man Pleads Guilty To A Federal Escape Charge

CHARLESTON, W.VA.- A 52-year-old Charleston, West Virginia, man will be facing up to five years in federal prison, after pleading guilty on Wednesday, to a federal escape offense in connection with failing to return to a federal residential reentry facility earlier this year.
On Wednesday, July 23, 2025, Ronald Edward Tinsley, 52, of Charleston, West Virginia, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia and pleaded guilty before U.S. District Court Judge Joseph R. Goodwin to one count of Escape.

Judge Goodwin Schedules Tinsley To Be Sentenced In October
Following entering his guilty plea, Judge Goodwin accepted the plea and scheduled sentencing for October 27, 2025. At that time, Tinsley faces up to five years in federal prison and at least one year of supervised release. At sentencing, a U.S. District Court Judge will determine the term of imprisonment based on the seriousness of the offense and Tinsley’s prior criminal history.

According to Acting U.S. Attorney Lisa G. Johnston and charging documents filed with the District Court, on March 25, 2025, Tinsley failed to return from an approved work pass to Dismas Charities, Inc., a Bureau of Prisons residential reentry facility, located in St. Albans, West Virginia. On May 13, 2025, Tinsely was taken into custody pursuant to a federal arrest warrant.
Tinsley had been confined at Dismas Charities as a result of his conviction for possessing a stolen firearm in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia in October of 2021.
Acting U.S. Attorney Johnston commended the investigative work of the United States Marshals Service for the apprehension of Tinsley and Wednesday’s guilty plea.
