DETROIT, MI.- A 59-year-old Detroit, Michigan, man, and a convicted registered sex offender, will most likely die in federal prison, after being found guilty last Thursday of sex trafficking two children and an adult.
According to U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon, Jr., following a seven-day trial before U.S. District Court Judge Terrence G. Berg, a federal jury for the Eastern District of Michigan found Kevin Lavon Giles, 59, of Detroit, Michigan, guilty of two counts of Sex Trafficking Children Through Force, Fraud, or Coercion; one count of Sex Trafficking an Adult Through Force, Fraud, or Coercion; and one count of Committing a Felony Against a Minor after having Been Required to Register as a Sex Offender.
Giles Was Convicted Of A Sex Crime In 1986
Giles, who was previously convicted in 1986 of Criminal Sexual Conduct, was registered as a sex offender in the national database at the time he committed the offenses for which he was found guilty on Thursday.
Following the jury’s returning their findings of guilt, Judge Berg accepted the verdict and scheduled sentencing for December 8, 2025. At that time, Giles faces a mandatory minimum of 25 years and up to life in federal prison, and if released from prison, will be subject to a lifetime of supervised release.
According To The Evidence Presented At Trial
According to evidence and testimony presented at trial, Giles exploited his female victims by requiring them to perform commercial sex acts in return for shelter for them and their children. Two of Giles’s victims were under the age of eighteen at the time he trafficked them.
Giles would post advertisements for commercial sex for all of his victims, arranged their commercial sex dates, and collected the money from the sex acts. Witnesses testified that Giles used hidden cameras to monitor the sex acts of all of his victims and direct the sex acts of the adult victim.
“If you question whether evil exists, you have your answer,” said U.S. Attorney Gorgon. “We are called to protect women and children. This man abused and exploited them to fill his pockets.”
“The conviction of Kevin Giles, a registered sex offender, reinforces our unwavering commitment to protecting our citizens, especially the most vulnerable, from those who seek to exploit them,” said Cheyvoryea Gibson, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Detroit Field Office. “I would like to extend my deepest appreciation to our Southeast Michigan Trafficking and Exploitation Task Force for their thorough investigative work. Investigating Human Trafficking is a top priority of the Bureau. We will continue to focus our efforts to save the lives of those who are victimized by bad actors and hold them accountable to justice.”Â
