Police Charge Man In Early Wednesday Morning Benning Road Shooting

WASHINGTON, DC.- On Thursday, a 31-year-old Southeast, D.C., man was taken into custody and jailed after being charged in connection with a shooting that occurred during the early morning hours on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, in Northeast, D.C.

     According to D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith, on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department responded to reports of gunfire on the 2000 Block of Benning Road in Northeast, D.C.

Police Learn A Verbal Dispute Leads To A Man Being Shot

     Upon arrival, Police Officers learned that the suspect and the victim were involved in a verbal altercation on Benning Road when the verbal dispute quickly escalated, with the suspect pulling out a handgun and shooting the victim, and then fleeing on foot. The victim was immediately transported by DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services, where he was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and has since been released.

     Following interviewing witnesses, including the victim, and recovering area video surveillance footage, Detectives were able to identify the suspect as Brian Diggs, 31, of Southeast, D.C.

Diggs Arrested And Charged On Thursday

     On Thursday, August 7, 2025, Diggs was located and taken into custody. Accordingly, Diggs was formally charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon; Carrying a Pistol Without a License; and Possession of Unregistered Ammunition. During Diggs’ arrest, Police Officers found him in possession of a firearm.

     Diggs was processed on the charges and was remanded to the D.C. Central Detention Facility, pending future court proceedings in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
