Jackson Township Man Charged In June’s Howell Township Slaying

Monday, August 11, 2025, 7:15 A.M. ET. 2 Minute Read, By Art Fletcher: Englebrook Independent News,

HOWELL TOWNSHIP, NJ.- Last week, a 47-year-old Jackson Township, New Jersey, man became the second person to be taken into custody and charged in connection with the targeted shooting death of a 36-year-old man that occurred in early June in Howell Township, New Jersey.

According to Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago, Salvador J. Cabellos Diaz, 47, of Jackson Township, New Jersey, was formally charged with first-degree Murder; second-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; and second-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose.

Diaz Was Arrested And Charged Last Week

Diaz was processed on the charges and was remanded to the Monmouth County Correctional Institution pending future court proceedings in Monmouth County Superior Court in Freehold, New Jersey.

The charges stem from an investigation that began on Thursday, June 5, 2025, when, shortly before 6:45 a.m., members of the Howell Township Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting an unresponsive man inside a parked vehicle on White Street in the Township. Upon arrival, Police Officers located a man, later identified as Rolando Acte Mejia, 36, of Howell Township, New Jersey, inside the vehicle, deceased from two gunshot wounds.

During the ensuing investigation, Detectives of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Bureau and the Howell Township Police Department determined that the shooting death of Mr. Mejia was an isolated incident and appeared to be targeted in nature. Investigators were quickly able to identify Juan Jesus Mejia Yanza, 33, of Howell Township, and Diaz as the suspects in the shooting death. Yanza was taken into custody without incident at his home on June 13, 2025, and remains in custody.

The Investigation Remains Ongoing

The investigation remains active and ongoing. Anyone with additional information regarding this investigation is urged to contact Detective Kayla Santiago of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office at (800) 533-7443 or Detective Vincent Bonner of the Howell Township Police Department at (732) 938-4111. All calls will be kept confidential.
