Police Charge Man For Role In Northeast Beating & Stabbing

WASHINGTON, DC.- Earlier this month, a 41-year-old Washington, D.C., man was taken into custody and remains jailed after being charged in connection with his role in a violent assault and stabbing that occurred in late May in Northeast, D.C., leaving a man hospitalized.
According to D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith, on Friday, May 30, 2025, just shortly before 9:00 p.m., members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s Sixth District responded to a report of a stabbing on the 3900 Block of Minnesota Avenue in Northeast, D.C.
Police Find Man Stabbed
Upon arrival, Police Officers found a man suffering from a stab wound. The man was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of a serious but non-life-threatening stab wound and has been released and continues to recover at home.
During the initial investigation, Police Officers and Detectives determined that the man, while on the 3900 Block of Minnesota Avenue, was physically assaulted by a group of individuals. During the assault, one of the suspects pulled out a knife and stabbed the man, seriously injuring him.
During the subsequent investigation, based on descriptions provided by the man as well as area video surveillance footage, Detectives were able to identify one of the suspects as Cornell Shumate, 41, of Northeast, D.C., and a DC Superior Court arrest warrant was issued.
On Friday, August 1, 2025, pursuant to the DC Superior Court warrant, Shumate was located and taken into custody and formally charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon Resulting in Significant Bodily Injury. Shumate was processed on the charge and was lodged in the D.C. Central Detention Facility pending future court proceedings in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.
