WASHINGTON, DC.- Early Sunday morning, a 17-year-old Suitland, Maryland, male was taken into custody at the hospital where he was being treated for a gunshot wound he sustained during an attempted robbery that occurred late Saturday night in Northeast, D.C.

According to D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith, on Saturday, September 20, 2025, just shortly before 10:30 p.m., members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s First District responded to reports of a shooting on the 200 Block of 8th Street in Northeast, D.C.

Police Officers Locate Off-Duty D.C. Firefighter Injured

Upon arrival, Police Officers located an adult male, who was identified as an off-duty D.C. Firefighter, suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The man was immediately transported by D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services to a nearby hospital for treatment. A short time later, an additional individual, the suspect in the shooting incident, was located on the 400 Block of 9th Street in Northeast, D.C. The suspect was also transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

During the initial investigation, Responding Police Officers and Detectives determined that the suspect approached the victim and demanded the victim’s money and cellular phone at gunpoint. The victim complied, and the suspect then demanded that the victim unlock his cell phone. A struggle ensued for the suspect’s handgun, causing the handgun to discharge, striking both the victim and the suspect.

Accordingly, early Sunday morning, Detectives arrested and charged the suspect, identified as a 17-year-old Suitland, Maryland, boy, with one count of Assault with Intent to Rob and related Weapons Offenses. Following being released from the hospital, the teen was processed on the charges and was remanded pursuant to a D.C. Superior Court Custody order, pending future court proceedings in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia Family Law Division.

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: As in adult criminal cases, the charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and a juvenile defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
