Luzerne County Man Sentenced For Narcotics Conspiracy

SCRANTON, PA.- A 38-year-old Jenkins Township, Pennsylvania, man will be spending nearly the next twelve years in federal prison after being sentenced for participating in a drug trafficking conspiracy that was responsible for distributing quantities of illicit narcotics throughout Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.

     According to Acting U.S. Attorney John C. Gurganus, on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, Ryan Medar, 38, of Jenkins Township, Pennsylvania, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania and was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Robert D. Mariani to 134 months in federal prison, to be followed by four years of supervised release after pleading guilty to a federal drug offense.

     Medar previously appeared in Federal Court in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and pleaded guilty to one count of Conspiracy to Distribute and Possess with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance, Cocaine, and 50 Grams or More of Methamphetamine.

According To Court Documents

     According to documents and statements made in the District Court, Medar conspired with his co-defendants, Jamie Smicherko, Patrick Russin, Carlos Laurel, and others to distribute controlled substances in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, beginning in October 2023 and lasting through April of 2024. Medar was responsible for distributing quantities of cocaine and methamphetamine to others. 

     During the investigation, law enforcement Investigators utilized a confidential informant to purchase methamphetamine and a handgun from Medar.

     Acting U.S. Attorney Gurganus commended the investigative work of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Kingston Police Department, the Plains Township Police Department, the Wilkes-Barre Police Department, the Pittstown Police Department, the Luzerne County Drug Task Force, the Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office, and the Lackawanna County District Attorney’s Office, which led to the successful prosecution of Medar.
