Voorhees Township Man Found Dead In Jail After Being Convicted Of Murdering His Wife

CAMDEN, NJ.- Today, Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay reported that the investigation is continuing into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 53-year-old Voorhees Township, New Jersey, man who was found deceased inside his cell at the Camden County Correctional Facility on Friday, September 19, 2025, just one day after he was convicted in connection with the strangulation death of his wife.

     According to the Prosecutor’s Office, on Friday, September 19, 2025, just shortly after 11:30 p.m., the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office was notified that a male inmate at the Camden County Correctional Facility was found deceased inside his jail cell.

     The man, identified as Shawn Lichtfuss, 53, of Voorhees Township, New Jersey, was found at approximately 11:18 p.m., unresponsive inside his cell during a cell check by Corrections Officers. Emergency Medical Services personnel responded, and despite life-saving measures, Lichtfuss was subsequently pronounced deceased at 11:39 p.m.

     Pursuant to N.J. Attorney General Directive 2019-4, the N.J. Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability was notified, and the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office was designated as the independent investigator under the supervision of the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability for this in-custody death, not involving the use of force. Additionally, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office will submit the complete findings of the investigation to the Attorney General’s Office for review.

     Following being notified, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office Special Prosecutions Unit responded to the Correctional Facility and conducted the investigation with the full cooperation of the Camden County Department of Corrections. 

     An autopsy was performed on Monday, September 22, 2025, by the Gloucester-Camden-Salem County Medical Examiner’s Office. The findings of the Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the Cause of Lichtfuss’s death to be Asphyxia and the Manner of Death to be Suicide.

     Lichtfuss was convicted by a Camden County Superior Court jury on Thursday, September 18, 2025, of first-degree Murder for the August 3, 2021, strangulation death of his wife.
