Closter Man Charged With Bilking An Elderly Couple Out Of $200,000

CLOSTER, NJ.- On Thursday, following a months-long investigation, a 73-year-old Closter, New Jersey, man was taken into custody and jailed after being formally charged with the alleged theft of around $200,000 from an elderly New Jersey couple.

     According to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella, in May 2025, the Bergen County Adult Protective Services contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office  Financial Crimes Unit regarding an allegation of misappropriation of funds belonging to an elderly couple.

Detectives Uncover $200,000 Theft

     During the ensuing investigation, Detectives uncovered that Anthony Gorga, 73, of Closter, New Jersey, in his capacity as the couple’s power of attorney, committed criminal acts of misappropriating entrusted funds by stealing approximately $200,000 from the couple for his personal benefit over several years.

     Accordingly, on Thursday, October 2, 2025, Gorga was taken into custody and formally charged by Detectives with one count of second-degree Misapplication of Entrusted Property. Gorga was processed on the charge and remanded to the Bergen County Jail, pending future court proceedings in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, New Jersey.

     If convicted at trial, Gorga faces up to 10 years in New Jersey State Prison and would be required to pay restitution in the amount of the total loss.

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
