Detectives Charge Man In September’s Jersey City Shooting Death

JERSEY CITY, NJ.- On Friday, following a nearly week-long investigation, a 26-year-old Jersey City, New Jersey, man was taken into custody and jailed after being charged in connection with fatally gunning down a 27-year-old man late last month in the Bergen-Lafayette neighborhood of Jersey City, New Jersey.
According to Acting U.S. Attorney Wayne Mello, Shakeem Clarke, 26, of Jersey City, New Jersey, was formally charged with one count of first-degree Murder; second-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; second-degree Possession of a Weapon; Endangering an Injured Victim; and Certain Persons Not to Possess Weapons.
Clarke Was Arrested And Charged Last Friday
Clarke was taken into custody on Friday, October 3, 2025, at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus, New Jersey. He was processed on the charges and remanded to the Hudson County Correctional Facility pending future court proceedings in Hudson County Superior Court in Jersey City, New Jersey.
The charges stem from an investigation that began on Sunday, September 28, 2025, when, shortly after 5:00 a.m., members of the Jersey City Police Department responded to reports of gunfire in the area of Union Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive in Jersey City. Upon arrival, Police Officers located a man, later identified as Jamaal George, 27, unresponsive, suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound to his upper chest.
Mr. George was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where, despite life-saving efforts, Mr George was subsequently pronounced deceased just shortly after 5:30 a.m. During the ensuing investigation, Detectives of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit, in conjunction with the Jersey City Police Department, were able to identify Clarke as the shooter and the individual responsible for Mr. George’s death, resulting in his arrest last Friday.
