MAYS LANDING, NJ.- A 51-year-old Atlantic City, New Jersey, apparent sexual predator will be spending a decade in New Jersey State Prison when sentenced early next year, after pleading guilty on Thursday to narcotics and sex crimes.

According to Atlantic County Prosecutor William E. Reynolds, on Thursday, October 24, 2025, Melvin Bishop, 51, of Atlantic City, New Jersey, appeared in Atlantic County Superior Court and pleaded guilty before Superior Court Judge Joseph Levin to second-degree Attempted Sexual Assault; and third-degree Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance, Cocaine.

Bishop Will Be Facing Up To 10 Years In Prison When Sentrnced

In return for the guilty plea, the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office will recommend that Bishop be sentenced to a term of 10 years in State Prison, subject to the No Early Release Act, which would require Bishop to serve 85% of his custodial term before becoming eligible for parole. Following entering his guilty plea, Judge Levin accepted the plea and scheduled sentencing for February 6, 2026.

The guilty plea stems from two incidents that occurred in Atlantic County, New Jersey. On May 9, 2023, members of the Atlantic City Police Department responded to a report of a defiant trespass at the Tropicana Casino & Hotel. Upon arrival, Police Officers encountered Bishop, who had refused to leave the Casino. During Bishop’s arrest, Police Officers found cocaine on Bishop’s person.

On November 26, 2024, while detained at the Atlantic County Justice Facility in Hamilton Township, New Jersey, Bishop entered the nurse’s office to undergo a medical examination. During the examination, Bishop made sexual advances toward the victim, chasing her and ripping at her clothing in an attempt to sexually assault her. The woman escaped Bishop and hid until corrections officers arrived.

Upon completion of his term of imprisonment, Bishop will be subject to parole supervision for life and be required to register as a sex offender pursuant to Megan’s Law registration requirements.
