Paterson Convicted Felon Sentenced For May 2024 Shooting Death

PATERSON, NJ.- On Tuesday, a 41-year-old Paterson, New Jersey, man and previously convicted felon learned that he will most likely die in New Jersey State Prison, after being sentenced to five decades for fatally gunning down a 62-year-old man on a Paterson, New Jersey street back in May 2024.
According to Passaic County Prosecutor Camela M. Valdes, on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, Jimmy Mercedes, 41, of Paterson, New Jersey, appeared in Passaic County Superior Court and was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Joy-Michele Roche to 40 years in State Prison, with a thirty-eight-and-one-half-year parole ineligibility, consecutive to ten years in State Prison, with five years to be setved before becoming eligible for parole, after being convicted for the murder of Daryle Robinson, 62, of Paterson, New Jersey.
On August 21, 2025, following a nearly month-long trial in Passaic County Superior Court, a jury found Mercedes guilty of first-degree Murder; Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; and Certain Persons Not to Possess Weapons.
   During the trial, Passaic County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Kelly M. Walsh and Assistant Prosecutor Matthew Benzoni presented evidence, including area video surveillance footage that showed on May 5, 2024, at around 10:22 p.m., Mercedes, shot Mr. Robinson twice in the area of Broadway and East 24th Street in the City of Paterson, Mr. Robinson would later succumbed his injuries on May 7, 2024.
