Former Stoughton Police Officer Charged In The Death Of His Victim’s Unborn Baby

Saturday, November 1, 2025, 8:00 A.M. ET. 3 Minute Read, By Art Fletcher: Englebrook Independent News,

BOSTON, MA.- A 39-year-old former Stoughton Police Officer, and accused child predator, currently in federal custody, previously indicted for allegedly murdering Sandra Birchmore, a pregnant woman, to prevent her from disclosing information about his sexual exploitation of her beginning when she was a minor, is facing another life sentence, after being federally indicted for causing the death of Ms. Birchmore’s unborn son.

According to U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley, on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, a Federal Grand Jury for the District of Massachusetts returned a superseding indictment charging Matthew Farwell, 39, formerly of Easton, Massachusetts, with one count of Causing the Death of an Unborn Child. Farwell was initially arrested and charged in August 2024 and has remained in custody since that time. Farwell will be arraigned on the charge at a later date.

According To The Charging Information Filed In The Indictment

According to the charging information unsealed in the superseding indictment, it is alleged that on or about February 1, 2021, Farwell allegedly killed Ms. Birchmore by strangulation. Shortly thereafter, Farwell allegedly staged her lifeless body and her apartment to make it appear as if she had committed suicide.

The indictment further alleges that Farwell killed Ms. Birchmore with malice and aforethought and with the intent to prevent her from telling law enforcement that he used his authority as a Police Officer to groom and sexually abuse Ms. Birchmore, including while he was on duty, beginning when she was just fifteen years old, and continuing until her death. The indictment also alleges that Farwell’s killing of Ms. Birchmore resulted in the death of her unborn child.

According to documents filed with the District Court, Farwell agreed to attempt to impregnate Ms. Birchmore in the fall of 2020 to avoid her publicly disclosing details about their relationship. Ms. Birchmore told Farwell that she was “keeping it” and “the birth certificate is being signed.” Farwell allegedly responded by telling her that she was “the worst person on the face of the earth.”

Over the next several weeks, Ms. Birchmore expressed excitement to Farwell about her due date, ultrasounds, genetic testing, gender reveals, and doctor’s appointments. She booked prenatal care appointments that post-dated her death. She also ordered baby items, conducted Google searches related to her pregnancy and future child-rearing decisions, planned for newborn baby photos, and an official pregnancy announcement intended for Valentine’s Day.

According to the indictment, Ms. Birchmore was eight to ten weeks pregnant at the time Farwell allegedly strangled her to death.

If convicted at trial, Farwell faces a mandatory sentence of life in federal prison for the charge of causing the death of an unborn child.

“The rules of the federal court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
