On The Eve Of New York City’s Mayoral Election, President Trump Backs Andrew Cuomo & Warns That A Mamdani Victory Could Cost The City Billions In Federal Aid

MANHATTAN, NY.- In a dramatic Monday night declaration on the eve of New York City’s mayoral election, President Donald J. Trump announced his endorsement of former Governor Andrew Cuomo and threatened to cut off federal funding to the city should Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani emerge victorious.

Speaking through his Truth Social account on Monday, Trump accused Mamdani, a progressive state assemblyman from Queens, of representing “communist” ideals that would “destroy what’s left of New York.” Trump wrote, “If it’s going to be between a bad Democrat and a communist, I’ll pick the bad Democrat all the time. Cuomo is tough, corrupt maybe, but at least he loves New York.”

Trump went further, during a 60 Minutes interview, vowing to limit financial support if Mamdani takes office: “Federal funds will be highly unlikely to continue to flow to New York City under a Mamdani administration, except for the bare minimum required by law.”

Cuomo, who is running as an independent after losing the Democratic primary, acknowledged the endorsement while maintaining that his campaign “is focused on uniting New Yorkers, not dividing them.” Mamdani’s campaign fired back, calling Trump’s comments “a direct attempt to blackmail voters through fear and intimidation.”

The high-stakes race now features three major contenders: Mamdani, Cuomo, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. Analysts say Trump’s surprise intervention could shift undecided voters and intensify turnout among moderates and conservatives who view Cuomo as a more pragmatic choice than the far-left Mamdani.

Federal funding remains a critical issue for the city. New York receives tens of billions in annual federal aid for housing, transportation, and social programs, funding that cannot legally be withdrawn without congressional or judicial review. Still, Trump’s threat underscores how national politics are deeply intertwined with the city’s local governance.

Political observers suggest that Trump’s move may energize Mamdani’s progressive base, framing the race as a referendum on federal overreach versus local autonomy. Early voting has already hit record levels, and both campaigns are mobilizing final-hour efforts ahead of polls opening at 6 a.m. Tuesday.

With tensions high and national attention locked on New York City, tomorrow’s results could redefine the relationship between the White House and America’s largest city.
