NEWARK, NJ.- Federal authorities are searching for a suspect who entered a New Jersey federal office of U.S. Attorney Alina Habba late Wednesday night, damaged property, and fled before law enforcement arrived, according to statements released Thursday morning.

     The incident occurred at one of the New Jersey offices overseen by Habba in her capacity as U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, a position in which she maintains federal facilities in Newark, Trenton, and Camden. Officials have not yet confirmed which of the three offices was targeted, but multiple Justice Department sources indicate the confrontation occurred inside a secured federal workspace used by Habba and her staff.

     According to preliminary investigative details, an unidentified individual gained access to the office area on Wednesday night and caused significant property damage before escaping. No injuries were reported, and Habba was not harmed.

Attorney General Pam Bondi Confirms Property Damage, Says Suspect Fled Before Arrest;

     Attorney General Pam Bondi, in public comments and statements released early Thursday, condemned the incident, describing it as a deliberate attempt to confront Habba during late working hours.

     “Last night, an individual attempted to confront one of our U.S. Attorneys,” Bondi said. “This person destroyed property in her office and then fled the scene. Thankfully, Alina is safe, and we are grateful for the immediate response by federal protective officers and the FBI.”

     Bondi added that the Justice Department is treating the matter as a serious threat to a federal official, and that investigators are “actively working every lead to identify and apprehend the person responsible.”

FBI Leading Active Search For Suspect;

     The FBI confirmed it is reviewing surveillance footage from the building and surrounding areas, interviewing personnel who were present in the office complex shortly before the incident, and coordinating with local law enforcement agencies in northern and central New Jersey.

     “We are seeking information from the public and continue to analyze evidence collected from the scene,” an FBI spokesperson said. “This remains an active and ongoing investigation. No arrests have been made.”

     Officials did not disclose whether the suspect is believed to have targeted Habba specifically or if the confrontation stemmed from another motive. What is known, based on confirmed federal statements, is that the individual entered the office, caused property damage, and escaped prior to the arrival of law enforcement.

Justice Department Reviewing Security Protocols;

     In the aftermath of the incident, the Justice Department is assessing building security procedures across its New Jersey offices. Staff who were in the building at the time are cooperating with investigators, and additional security personnel have been assigned to federal complexes across the district as a precaution.

     Habba has not issued a public statement but is said to be fully cooperating with investigators while continuing her duties as the state’s chief federal prosecutor.

     Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the Wednesday night incident to contact the FBI’s Newark Field Office.
