NEWARK, NJ.- A night that began as an ordinary midweek session at a Newark recording studio ended in devastating violence on Wednesday, leaving two young men dead and two others wounded. The shooting, which erupted just after 8:00 p.m. inside the Platinum Sound Recording Studio, located at 790 Clinton Avenue, has shaken the South Ward community and intensified ongoing concerns about rising gun violence in the city.
According to Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, and the Newark Police Department, officers responding to multiple 911 calls arrived to find four men suffering from gunshot wounds. The scene, described by law enforcement officials as deeply tragic,” revealed the scale and swiftness of the attack.
Namir Bynum, 20, of Newark, was pronounced dead at the scene after officers and medics were unable to revive him. Moments later, another victim, Osayuwamen Uyamu, 20, also of Newark, was rushed to University Hospital in critical condition. Despite intensive life-saving efforts, Mr. Uyamu succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at 8:41 p.m.
Two additional men were transported to University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. One has since been treated and released. The condition of the fourth victim remains unknown as of Thursday morning.
The studio, a modest building long used by local artists and producers, quickly became the center of an extensive police presence as crime scene investigators worked late into the night, gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses. Detectives from both the Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office are leading the investigation.
Authorities stressed that no arrests have been made and no suspects have been publicly identified. Investigators are now working to determine the motive behind the shooting and whether any of the victims were targeted in the shooting.
“This remains an active and ongoing investigation,” a spokesperson for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said early Thursday. “We are urging anyone with information, no matter how small it may seem, to come forward.”
Officials are asking the public to share any relevant tips by contacting the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Tips Line at 1-877-TIPS-4EC (1-877-847-7432). All calls will be kept confidential.
As word of the tragedy spread overnight, family members, friends, and neighbors began gathering outside the studio and on surrounding blocks, many in tears, others in stunned silence. For those who knew Bynum and Uyamu, the loss is immeasurable, two young lives cut down abruptly, adding to a year already marked by grief in communities across the City of Newark.
Residents say the violence feels relentless, another reminder of how quickly a normal night can turn deadly.
Englebrook Independent News will continue to follow developments as investigators piece together what happened during those fatal moments on Clinton Avenue.
