Bergenfield Woman Charged For Running Down A Woman And Fleeing

RIVER EDGE, NJ.- On Tuesday, following a swift-moving investigation, a 47-year-old Bergenfield, New Jersey, woman was taken into custody and jailed after being charged in connection with allegedly running down a woman, early Tuesday evening, in River Edge, New Jersey, and fleeing the scene, leaving the woman lying in the roadway seriously injured.
According to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella, on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at around 6:15 p.m., members of the River Edge Police Department responded to reports of a pedestrian being struck by a motor vehicle at the intersection of Kinderkamack Road and Windsor Road in River Edge.
Upon arrival, Responding Police Officers found a 35-year-old lying in the roadway after being struck by a vehicle. The woman was immediately transported to Hackensack University Medical Center, where she remains hospitalized with serious injuries.
Police Quickly Identify York And Place Her Under Arrest
During the initial investigation, Investigators of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the River Edge Police Department quickly determined that the woman was struck by a 2009 Nissan Sentra while she was crossing the road and that the vehicle fled the scene. Further investigation uncovered that the Nissan Sentra was being operated by Demetria York, 47, of Bergenfield, New Jersey.
Accordingly, later on Tuesday evening, York was taken into custody and formally charged with one count of third-degree Knowingly Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury; third-degree Endangering an Injured Victim; and third-degree Hindering Apprehension. York was processed on the charges and was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending future court proceedings in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, New Jersey.
