Union City Man Jailed After Being Charged In Pedestrian Hit & Run

UNION CITY, NJ.- On Tuesday, following an investigation, a 56-year-old Union City, New Jersey, man was taken into custody and jailed after being charged in connection with allegedly running down a Union City, New Jersey, woman and fleeing the scene, leaving the woman lying in the roadway seriously injured.
According to Acting Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello, Detectives of the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit formally charged Carlos Mejia, 56, of Union City, with Aggravated Assault; Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Crash Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury; Endangering an Injured Victim; Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon; Domestic Violence Aggravated Assault; Assault by Auto; and Obstruction.
Following Being Charged, Mejia Was Lodged In The Hudson County Jail
Mejia was taken into custody at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus, New Jersey, on Tuesday, December 23, 2025. After being processed on the charges, Mejia was remanded to the Hudson County Correctional Facility pending future court proceedings in Hudson County Superior Court in Jersey City, New Jersey.
The charges stem from an investigation that began on Saturday, February 22, 2025, when, just shortly after 9:00 p.m., members of the Union City Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting a woman struck by a motor vehicle that fled the scene, near the intersection of 17th Street and Bergenline Avenue in Union City.
Upon arrival, Responding Police Officers found a 32-year-old Union City, New Jersey, woman lying in the roadway, suffering from serious injuries. The woman was transported to an area hospital for treatment. During the initial investigation, Police Officers learned that the woman was struck by a box truck-style van, which then fled the area.
   During the ensuing investigation, Investigators with the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit located the vehicle. They later determined that Mejia was the driver of the vehicle who struck the woman and fled the scene.
