Two Gunned Down, One Fatally In Southeast, D.C. New Year’s Eve Shooting

WASHINGTON, DC.- The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department is continuing the investigation into the circumstances surrounding a double shooting that occurred during the afternoon hours on New Year’s Eve in Southeast, D.C., claiming the life of a 31-year-old Northeast, D.C., man, and leaving another man hospitalized in critical condition.
According to Interim D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Jeffery W. Carroll, on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, just minutes after 1:00 p.m., members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s Sixth District responded to reports of gunfire in the rear of a building located on the 200 Block of 37th Street in Southeast, D.C.
Police Officers Find Two Men Suffering From Gunshot Wounds
Upon arrival, Responding Police Officers located two men suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Both men were immediately transported by DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services to a nearby hospital, where, despite life-saving efforts, one of the men, identified as Darnell Bassett, 31, of Northeast, D.C., succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased a short time later. The man remains hospitalized and has been listed in critical condition.
The investigation remains active and ongoing. No arrests have been made as Detectives continue the search for the suspect and a motive for the shooting.
