Newark Man Convicted In December 2021, Domestic Violence Slaying

IRVINGTON, NJ.- A 34-year-old Newark, New Jersey, man will be facing up to 40 years in New Jersey State Prison when sentenced early next month, after being found guilty on charges for causing the death of an Elizabeth, New Jersey, woman during a domestic dispute that occurred back in December 2021, in Irvington, New Jersey.

According to Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Strephens, II, late last month, following a trial in Essex County Superior Court before the Honorable Verna G. Leath, a jury found Lando Marc, 34, of Newark, New Jersey, guilty of first-degree Aggravated Manslaughter; second-degree Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death; and related offenses, in the death of Jenny Philistin, of Elizabeth, New Jersey.

Following the jury returning their findings of guilt, Judge Leath accepted the verdict and scheduled sentencing for February 5, 2026. At that time, Marc faces ten to 30 years in State Prison for the aggravated manslaughter charge, and a mandatory consecutive term of five years and up to 10 years for leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death.

During the trial, Assistant Prosecutors Adam Wells and Ibn Alston presented evidence that proved beyond a reasonable doubt that on December 9, 2021, members of the Irvington Police Department responded to a domestic violence incident involving Marc and Ms. Philistin, who had been attending a party at a residence located on Stuyvesant Avenue in Irvington, New Jersey.

As the Police Officers arrived, Marc attempted to evade them by getting into his vehicle. Ms. Philistin followed Marc, and as the Officers approached, she jumped onto the hood of his parked vehicle to prevent him from driving away. Marc quickly drove off with Philistin on the hood of his car. Marc then ran a stop sign and proceeded the wrong way down a one-way street. Marc then lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a parked car, killing Ms. Philistin.

Marc then fled the scene and remained at large for shortly over a month before surrendering to authorities on January 14, 2022.

Assistant Prosecutor Wells said, “This was a senseless and avoidable tragedy. The defendant’s complete disregard for Ms. Philistin’s life directly led to her death. We are glad that we could get justice for the victim in this case.” Assistant Prosecutor Alston added, “While there is nothing we can do to bring Jenny back, we hope this verdict can bring closure to the Philistin family as they continue to grieve.”
