WASHINGTON, D.C.- On Sunday, a 37-year-old Washington, D.C., man was taken into custody and jailed after being charged with stabbing a man during a fight last month in Northwest, D.C.

According to Interim D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Jeffery W. Carroll, on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at around 12:00 a.m., members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s Second District responded to a local hospital after being notified that a man had arrived at the hospital requesting treatment for a non-life-threatening stab wound.

Upon arrival, Police Officers were informed by the victim that while inside an establishment on the 1000 Block of Vermont Avenue in Northwest, D.C., they became involved in a verbal argument with the suspect. The argument quickly escalated, and the suspect pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim before fleeing the store.

During the ensuing investigation, based on a description provided by the victim and the store’s video surveillance footage, the Police were able to identify the suspect as Shelton Brooks Elder, 37, of Northwest, D.C.

On Sunday, January 4, 2026, while on patrol, Second District Police Officers spotted Elder on the 1200 Block of Connecticut Avenue in Northwest, D.C. Elder was taken into custody and formally charged with one count of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon. Elder was processed on the charge and was remanded to the D.C. Central Detention Facility pending future court proceedings in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
