Elderly Woman Perishes In Tuesday Night Jersey City Apartment Fire

JERSEY CITY, NJ.- Investigators are continuing the investigation into the circumstances surrounding a Tuesday night fire that tragically claimed the life of an elderly woman inside her apartment in the Greenville section of Jersey City, New Jersey.

     According to Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello, on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at around 8:45 p.m., members of the Jersey City Fire Department and the Jersey City Police Department responded to 911 Emergency Calls reporting a fire at an apartment located at 11 College Drive in the Greenville Section of Jersey City, New Jersey.

     Upon arrival, Firefighters and Police Officers discovered heavy smoke coming from a fifth-floor apartment unit of a five-story residential building. During firefighting activities, Firefighters discovered a woman, later identified as Maxine Sullivan, 85, of Jersey City, unresponsive. Ms. Sullivan was immediately transported by Emergency Medical Services to Jersey City Medical Center, where, despite life-saving efforts, Ms. Sullivan tragically succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased shortly after 10:00 p.m.

     At this time, the fire does not appear suspicious. The investigation remains active and is being conducted by members of the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Jersey City Fire Department.
