STAFFORD TOWNSHIP, NJ.- A fatal residential structure fire in Stafford Township early Thursday morning has been ruled accidental following a comprehensive, multi-agency investigation, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer reported.

     At approximately 1:20 a.m. on February 13, 2026, the Stafford Township Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to a residence on Yeoman Road after receiving reports of a structure fire with possible occupants trapped inside. Upon arrival, emergency responders encountered heavy fire conditions and confirmed reports of entrapment within the home.

     According to prosecutors, three individuals were inside the residence when the fire broke out. Two of those individuals were able to escape the burning structure and were immediately transported to area trauma centers for treatment. One victim was taken to Temple University Hospital’s Burn Center, where officials reported that the individual remains in stable condition. The second victim was transported to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and is also listed in stable condition.

     A third resident, identified as Betty Matero, 92, was unable to escape the fire. She sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased as a result of the incident.

Extensive Multi-Agency Investigation;

     A thorough and extensive investigation was conducted by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit–Arson Squad, the Stafford Township Police Department Detective Bureau, the Stafford Township Fire Prevention Bureau, the Ocean County Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit.

     Investigators determined that the fire originated along the southeast exterior wall of the residence. More specifically, the point of origin was traced to an outdoor storage container located adjacent to the home. Based on physical evidence, burn patterns, and forensic analysis, authorities concluded that the fire was accidental.

     The probable cause was identified as a failure involving lithium-ion batteries stored within the container. Officials emphasized that no evidence of criminal activity was uncovered during the investigation.

Medical Examiner’s Findings;

     On February 13, 2026, a post-mortem examination of Ms. Matero was conducted by the Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office. The Medical Examiner determined that the cause of death was smoke inhalation. The manner of death was officially ruled accidental.

Public Safety Reminder;

     Authorities used the announcement to reiterate the potential dangers associated with lithium-ion batteries, particularly when they are stored improperly or damaged. Fire officials continue to urge residents to follow manufacturer guidelines for storage and charging, avoid exposing batteries to extreme temperatures, and dispose of damaged or aging batteries at approved facilities.

     The investigation into the fire has been formally concluded.
