MIDDLE TOWNSHIP, NJ.- A routine walk through a wooded area in the Whitesboro section of Middle Township has led to a developing investigation after a county resident discovered what appeared to be a human skull earlier this week, prompting a coordinated search by multiple law enforcement agencies across Cape May County.
Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland and Middle Township Police Chief Tracey Super confirmed that the discovery was reported to authorities on March 3, 2026, when a local resident encountered what appeared to be human remains while walking through a wooded area.
The individual immediately contacted the Middle Township Police Department, which initiated an investigation and secured the location pending the arrival of additional investigative personnel.
According to authorities, the discovery triggered a coordinated response involving multiple law enforcement and search-and-rescue teams from across the region.
Investigators from the Middle Township Police Department, Lower Township Police Department, and the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office were joined by specialized search teams, including the Cape May County Land Search and Rescue Team and the New Jersey Department of Corrections Land Search and Rescue Team.
The multi-agency task force conducted a systematic, methodical search of the surrounding wooded terrain to determine whether additional remains or evidence were present near the discovery site.
During that search, authorities located and recovered additional skeletal remains believed to belong to an adult individual.
Officials have not yet publicly identified the remains.
“At this time, a positive identification has not been made,” Prosecutor Sutherland stated in an official release issued by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office.
The remains have been secured as evidence and will undergo forensic examination as part of the identification process. Investigators typically rely on a combination of forensic anthropology, medical examiner analysis, dental records, and DNA testing in cases involving unidentified skeletal remains.
Authorities have not yet indicated how long the remains may have been located in the wooded area, nor have they stated whether the discovery is connected to any known missing persons cases within Cape May County or elsewhere in New Jersey.
Law enforcement officials also emphasized that investigators currently do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the public.
“At this time, there is no threat to the public,” Prosecutor Sutherland stated while noting that the investigation remains active.
Investigators are continuing to examine the location where the remains were discovered, as well as the surrounding terrain, for any evidence that could help determine the circumstances surrounding the individual’s death or how the remains came to be in the area.
The Whitesboro section of Middle Township, located in Cape May County, contains both residential neighborhoods and large wooded tracts of land. Portions of the area remain sparsely populated, a factor that can complicate investigations when human remains are discovered in remote locations.
Authorities say the next phase of the investigation will focus on forensic identification and determining whether any missing persons reports could be linked to the remains recovered at the site.
Prosecutor Sutherland is urging anyone who may have information relevant to the investigation to come forward.
Members of the public can submit anonymous tips through the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office confidential tip system at cmcpo.tips, or by contacting the Prosecutor’s Office directly at 609-465-1135.
Officials say additional information will be released as the investigation progresses.
For now, investigators continue working to determine the identity of the individual and the circumstances that led to the remains being discovered in the wooded area.
