WASHINGTON, DC.- The 53 Democrats who voted against a House resolution reaffirming Iran’s status as a state sponsor of terrorism represent a distinct faction within the Democratic caucus that has often challenged traditional U.S. foreign policy approaches.
While the resolution passed overwhelmingly, the opposition vote has drawn national attention because it includes a number of prominent progressive lawmakers and long-serving members of Congress.
A Coalition Of Progressive Voices;
Several members associated with the Democratic Party’s progressive wing were among those voting against the resolution.
These lawmakers have frequently advocated for diplomatic engagement and congressional oversight of military action abroad.
Among the most recognizable names on the list are:
- Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (New York)
- Ilhan Omar (Minnesota)
- Rashida Tlaib (Michigan)
- Ayanna Pressley (Massachusetts)
- Summer Lee (Pennsylvania)
- Greg Casar (Texas)
- Maxwell Frost (Florida)
Many of these lawmakers have previously supported legislation aimed at limiting presidential authority to conduct military operations without congressional approval.
Veteran Lawmakers Also Joined the Opposition;
The list also includes several long-tenured Democratic lawmakers who have historically taken critical positions on U.S. military policy.
Among them are:
- Maxine Waters (California)
- Jan Schakowsky (Illinois)
- Raúl Grijalva (Arizona)
- Mark Pocan (Wisconsin)
- Jim McGovern (Massachusetts)
- Lloyd Doggett (Texas)
These members have frequently advocated diplomatic solutions to international conflicts and have supported congressional efforts to restrict military interventions.

What The Vote Reveals;
Although the resolution ultimately passed by a wide margin, the opposition vote illustrates the ideological divisions within the Democratic Party on national security policy and the use of U.S. power abroad.
With tensions between Washington and Tehran continuing to simmer, the debate surrounding the resolution is unlikely to fade anytime soon.
Editor’s Note:
Iran has been officially designated a State Sponsor of Terrorism by the U.S. Department of State since 1984. House Resolution 1099 does not change that designation but serves as a formal congressional reaffirmation of the policy.
