TORONTO, CAN.- Canadian authorities are investigating after gunshots were fired near the United States Consulate in downtown Toronto early Tuesday morning, an incident officials described as an “unacceptable act of violence and intimidation.” However, no injuries or property damage were reported.
According to the Toronto Police Service, officers responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 5:29 a.m. local time near the U.S. consulate building located along University Avenue near Queen Street West, a major intersection in the city’s downtown government district.
Investigators arriving at the scene discovered evidence that a firearm had been discharged, though police did not confirm whether the shots directly struck the consulate building itself. Authorities also confirmed that no individuals were injured and no immediate structural damage was reported.
At this stage of the investigation, no suspects have been identified, and police have not announced any arrests or publicly released descriptions of potential perpetrators. Officials also stated that no motive has yet been determined.
Police Response And Investigation;
Toronto police said officers were first alerted to the incident shortly before 5:30 a.m., prompting an immediate law-enforcement response to the diplomatic complex and surrounding streets.
Authorities established a security perimeter while investigators searched the area for ballistic evidence and reviewed surveillance footage from nearby buildings and traffic cameras. Police confirmed that shell casings or other indicators of firearm discharge were located during the initial examination of the scene.
Road closures and increased patrols were temporarily implemented in the surrounding downtown area as investigators worked to determine how many shots were fired and whether the suspect fled on foot or by vehicle. But police later confirmed that the suspects fled in a white Honda Sport Utility Vehicle.
The U.S. State Department confirmed it was aware of the incident and said American officials were closely coordinating with Canadian law enforcement, though no additional details were immediately released.
Strong Condemnation From Canadian Officials;
Ontario Premier Doug Ford condemned the shooting in a public statement posted to social media, calling the act an attempt to intimidate American diplomatic personnel.
“The shooting that took place at the U.S. consulate in Toronto early this morning is an absolutely unacceptable act of violence and intimidation aimed at our American friends and neighbours,” Ford wrote.
Ford added that Canadian authorities intend to aggressively pursue those responsible.
“I’m glad to see that Toronto Police are investigating, and I expect that police at all levels will bring every resource to bear to find the people who did this. We will do whatever it takes to prosecute and punish the people responsible to the fullest extent of the law.”
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow also addressed the incident, noting that police presence had been increased at diplomatic facilities throughout the city as a precaution.
“This morning the U.S. consulate was shot at,” Chow said during remarks before a Toronto City Council meeting. “This cannot stand.”
Heightened Security Concerns;
The shooting comes amid a series of recent security incidents in the Toronto region that have prompted increased concern among law enforcement officials.
Over the previous weekend, two synagogues in the greater Toronto area were struck by gunfire during overnight incidents, though no injuries were reported in those cases either. Authorities have not confirmed whether the synagogue shootings are connected to Tuesday’s consulate incident.
Officials have also increased patrols around both the U.S. and Israeli diplomatic missions in Toronto as a precaution while the investigation continues.
Security experts say attacks or attempted attacks on diplomatic facilities, even those that cause no casualties, are typically treated as serious incidents due to their international implications and potential diplomatic consequences.
Ongoing Investigation;
As of Tuesday afternoon, investigators had not released surveillance images of the suspects’ descriptions or information regarding the weapon used in the shooting.
Police have asked members of the public who may have been in the area early Tuesday morning to come forward with any video footage, dash-cam recordings, or eyewitness accounts that could assist the investigation.
Authorities emphasized that the incident remains under active investigation, and further details are expected as forensic analysis and witness interviews continue.
Editor’s Note:
The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have not yet determined a motive for the shooting, and law enforcement officials have asked the public for any information that could assist investigators.
