Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force Apprehends 20-Year-Old Kevin Hider, More Than Two Years After The Fatal Shooting Of Kenneth Barksdale Jr.

WASHINGTON, DC.- The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) announced Monday that a third suspect has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred in Southeast Washington, D.C., in late 2023, a case that left a 28-year-old man dead and prompted a multi-agency fugitive investigation.
According to authorities, the arrest was made on March 9, 2026, when members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force (CARFTF) apprehended Kevin Hider, 20, of Northeast Washington, D.C. Hider was taken into custody pursuant to a warrant issued by the D.C. Superior Court and transported to the MPD Homicide Branch.
Investigators charged Hider with First Degree Murder While Armed, Felony Murder in connection with the December 2023 killing.
Fatal Shooting In Southeast;
The homicide occurred on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at approximately 8:07 p.m., when Sixth District officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 1200 block of 44th Place, Southeast, D.C.
Upon arrival, officers discovered an adult male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel transported the victim to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries, according to police.
The victim was identified as Kenneth Barksdale Jr., 28, of Southeast Washington, D.C.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed additional details regarding the circumstances of the shooting, including a possible motive or whether the incident stemmed from a robbery or other felony offense, which could explain the felony-murder charge filed against the suspects.
Earlier Arrests In The Case;
Monday’s arrest marks the third suspect taken into custody in the homicide investigation.
Members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force previously located and arrested two additional suspects during coordinated enforcement operations in 2024.
On July 31, 2024, investigators arrested D’Andre Montgomery, then 18, of Southeast Washington, D.C. Montgomery was transported to the MPD Homicide Branch and charged, pursuant to a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant, with First Degree Murder While Armed, Felony Murder.
The following day, August 1, 2024, the task force arrested Eric Sheffield, then 19, of Northeast Washington, D.C. Sheffield was also transported to the Homicide Branch and charged under a Superior Court warrant with First Degree Murder While Armed, Felony Murder.
Police have not disclosed whether the suspects are alleged to have played distinct roles in the killing or whether investigators believe the shooting occurred during the commission of another felony.
Ongoing Investigation;
The Metropolitan Police Department said the investigation remains active and ongoing, and officials are continuing to seek additional information from the public.
Authorities are urging anyone with knowledge about the incident to contact police.
