WASHINGTON, DC.- A Connecticut man has been formally charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a 27-year-old woman inside a Columbia Heights residence earlier this year, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
Authorities say the incident occurred during the early morning hours of Monday, February 2, 2026, when officers assigned to the Metropolitan Police Department’s Third District responded to a 911 hang-up call at approximately 3:07 a.m. in the 3100 block of 16th Street Northwest, D.C.
When officers arrived at the scene, they entered the residence and discovered an adult female suffering from a gunshot wound.
Personnel from D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services were dispatched to the location and attempted to assess the victim’s condition. After evaluating the woman, emergency responders determined that she showed no signs consistent with life, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities later identified the victim as Nyesha Walden-Hatcher, 27, of Northwest Washington, D.C.
Investigation Leads to Suspect;
Detectives assigned to the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch launched an investigation immediately following the discovery of the victim.
Through investigative efforts in the days that followed, authorities identified Tyjuan Bazemore, 35, as a suspect in the killing. Detectives obtained a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant charging Bazemore with Second-Degree Murder While Armed (Gun).
Because Bazemore was believed to be located outside the District of Columbia, law enforcement officials coordinated with authorities in Connecticut to locate and apprehend him.
Arrest In Connecticut;
On Tuesday, February 10, 2026, members of the Connecticut Violent Crimes Fugitive Task Force located Bazemore in Middletown, Connecticut, where he was taken into custody pursuant to the outstanding arrest warrant issued by the D.C. Superior Court.
Authorities have not publicly released additional details about the circumstances that led investigators to Bazemore or his relationship to the victim, as the case remains under active prosecution.
Extradition to Washington, D.C.;
Following his arrest in Connecticut, Bazemore remained in custody while legal proceedings were completed to transfer him to the District of Columbia.
According to MPD officials, Bazemore was extradited to Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, where he was taken into custody by members of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Fugitive Unit.
He was subsequently transported to the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch, where he was formally charged pursuant to the D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant with Second-Degree Murder While Armed (Gun) in connection with the fatal shooting of Walden-Hatcher.
Under District of Columbia law, a conviction for second-degree murder while armed carries the possibility of significant prison time.
Interagency Cooperation;
The Metropolitan Police Department credited its law enforcement partners in Connecticut for assisting in locating and apprehending the suspect outside the District.
Metropolitan Police Department officials specifically thanked the Connecticut Violent Crimes Fugitive Task Force for its role in identifying Bazemore’s location and executing the arrest.
The Connecticut Violent Crimes Fugitive Task Force is a multi-agency law enforcement task force that works to locate and apprehend fugitives wanted for violent crimes across jurisdictional lines.
The investigation into Walden-Hatcher’s death remains ongoing as the case proceeds through the District of Columbia Superior Court system.
