Prosecutors Say The Alleged Abuse Of A Juvenile Occurred Over Several Years In Bergen County

Friday, March 13, 2026, 12:00 P.M. ET. 3 Minute Read, By Art Fletcher: Englebrook Independent News,

FAIRVIEW, NJ.- A 59-year-old Fairview man has been arrested and charged with multiple sexual assault offenses following an investigation into allegations that he repeatedly assaulted a juvenile over a period of several years, authorities announced.

Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said the arrest of Elder G. Mimbela-Portilla, 59, of Fairview, was the result of a joint investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit, under the direction of Chief Jeff Angermeyer, and the Fairview Police Department, led by Chief Vincent Belucci.

According to prosecutors, the investigation began on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, when the Fairview Police Department contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit regarding allegations that a juvenile had been sexually assaulted in the past.

Authorities said detectives launched a joint investigation, which revealed that Mimbela-Portilla allegedly sexually assaulted and endangered a juvenile on more than one occasion in Fairview, New Jersey, between November 1, 2017, and November 21, 2021.

Investigators determined that the alleged abuse occurred over several years and involved conduct that led prosecutors to pursue multiple felony charges under New Jersey law.

Following the investigation, Mimbela-Portilla was arrested on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office in Paramus, New Jersey.

     He has been charged with:

     • First-degree aggravated sexual assault
     • Second-degree sexual assault by contact
     • Second-degree endangering the welfare of a child

After his arrest, Mimbela-Portilla was remanded to the Bergen County Jail, where he remains in custody pending his first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, New Jersey.

Under New Jersey law, first-degree aggravated sexual assault is among the most serious criminal charges in the state, carrying potential penalties that can include lengthy prison sentences if a defendant is convicted. Individuals convicted of such offenses may also face additional consequences under state supervision and sex offender registration laws.

Officials did not release additional details about the victim due to the individual’s status as a minor.

The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities urged anyone with additional information related to the case to contact the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit or the Fairview Police Department.
