NEWARK, NJ.- An Essex County jury has found a Newark man guilty of violently assaulting an adult woman and sexually assaulting a minor during a series of attacks that occurred in Irvington in the early morning hours of June 3, 2024, authorities announced.
Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II said Caream Davis, 46, of Newark, was convicted of numerous serious offenses following a four-day trial in Essex County Superior Court.
The jury found Davis guilty of two counts of first-degree Aggravated Sexual Assault, one count of first-degree Kidnapping, one count of second-degree Aggravated Assault, one count of third-degree Aggravated Assault, one count of third-degree Making Terroristic Threats, one count of third-degree Criminal Restraint, and two counts of third-degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant Prosecutor Logan Teisch and Assistant Prosecutor Patrick Wagner before Superior Court Judge Michael L. Ravin, J.S.C.
Jurors returned their verdict Friday, March 6, 2026, following four days of testimony and two days of deliberations.
Violent Early-Morning Attacks;
According to evidence presented during the trial, Davis first targeted a 51-year-old woman who was walking her dogs in Irvington during the early hours of June 3, 2024.
Prosecutors said Davis approached the woman from behind and punched her in the head, knocking her to the ground. While she lay on the pavement, Davis continued striking her repeatedly, causing significant injuries.
After the assault, Davis left the scene and walked several blocks away.
There, prosecutors said, he encountered a minor who was also walking a dog. Authorities said Davis began speaking with the child before suddenly grabbing the victim by the neck and strangling him.
Investigators testified that Davis carried the child to the side of a nearby building, where he sexually assaulted the minor. During the attack, prosecutors said Davis threatened to kill the victim, escalating the already violent encounter.
Flight And Arrest;
Following the assaults, Davis fled New Jersey and traveled to Richmond, Virginia.
Law enforcement authorities tracked him down within days.
On June 5, 2024, Davis was apprehended by members of the U.S. Marshals Service and the Richmond Police Department, working in coordination with investigators from New Jersey.
Authorities said Davis was extradited to New Jersey on June 10, 2024, where he remained in custody pending trial.
Prosecutors Commend Victims And Investigators;
Assistant Prosecutor Logan Teisch praised the victims for their courage in testifying during the trial.
“The victims went outside that morning to simply walk their dogs. They could not have imagined how that ordinary task would change their lives forever,” Teisch said. “Both victims endured a harrowing ordeal at the hands of the defendant. The extraordinary courage it took for them to confront him in court cannot be overstated.”
Assistant Prosecutor Patrick Wagner also credited the victims and investigators whose work led to the conviction.
“This outcome was only possible because of the bravery shown by the victims and the diligent work of the investigators involved,” Wagner said. “We thank the jury for their time and for ultimately returning a just verdict.”
Multi-Agency Investigation;
Authorities said the investigation involved collaboration between multiple agencies, including:
- Irvington Police Department
- Essex County Prosecutor’s Office
- Richmond, Virginia Police Department
- U.S. Marshals Service
- Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
Prosecutors thanked investigators from each agency for their assistance in locating and apprehending Davis, as well as for their work during the investigation and prosecution of the case.
Sentencing Scheduled;
Davis is scheduled to be sentenced on July 20, 2026, in Essex County Superior Court.
According to prosecutors, he faces a potential sentence ranging from 30 years to life in prison based on the first-degree convictions.
