Ecuadorian Man Charged With Illegal Reentry

Friday, May 2, 2025, 2:00 P.M. ET. 1 Minute Read, By Art Fletcher: Englebrook Independent News,

BOSTON, MA.- On Thursday, May 1, 2025, a Federal Grand Jury for the District of Massachusetts returned an indictment charging Gilberto Avila-Jara, 66, an Ecuadorian national, illegally residing in Lawrence, Massachusetts, with one count of Illegal Reentry into the United States by a Previously Deported Alien.

According to U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley and charging information unsealed in the indictment, it is alleged that Avila-Jara, who was removed from the United States on June 2, 1996, allegedly sometime after his June 1996 removal, unlawfully reentered the United States at an unknown location without obtaining permission or legal authorization to do so.

Avila-Jara was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement on April 1, 2025, after being found unlawfully in the District of Massachusetts.

If convicted at trial, Avila-Jara faces up to two years in federal prison, at least one year of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. Upon a finding of guilt, a U.S. District Court Judge will determine the term of imprisonment based on the seriousness of the offense and Avila-Jara’s prior criminal history.

Upon completion of any sentence imposed, Avila-Jara will face immediate deportation proceedings and be removed from the United States.

“The rules of the federal court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
