Paterson Man Charged In Tuesday’s Fatal Stabbing Investigation

PATERSON, NJ.- On Thursday, May 8, 2025, following an investigation, a 72-year-old Paterson, New Jersey, man was taken into custody and charged in connection with the brutal stabbing death of a 70-year-old Paterson, New Jersey woman who was found dead Tuesday afternoon inside her home.

     According to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes, Duwan Gales, 72, of Paterson, New Jersey, has been formally charged with first-degree Murder; third-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; and fourth-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon.

Police Respond To A Report Of A Stabbing

     The charges stem from an incident that unfolded on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, when, shortly after 2:15 p.m., members of the Paterson Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting a stabbing at a residence located in the area of Cianci and Market Streets in the City of Paterson.

Upon Arrival, Police Officers Find Woman Dead

     Upon arrival, Police Officers found the lifeless body of a 70-year-old Paterson woman inside her home, having succumbed from multiple stab wounds. The woman was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene.

     During the ensuing investigation by members of the Paterson Police Department in conjunction with the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Investigations Unit, Detectives were able to identify Gales as the assailant and the individual responsible for causing the death of the woman.

     Accordingly, Gales was taken into custody on Thursday without incident and charged. Following being processed on the charges, Gales was remanded to the Custody of the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office, pending his first appearance in Passaic County Central Judicial Processing Court. The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office has filed a motion with the court to detain Gales pending trial.
