Detroit’s “Black Rob” Heading To Federal Prison For West Virginia Drug Crime

HUNTINGTON, W.VA.- On Monday, a 40-year-old Detroit, Michigan, man learned he would be spending the next eight years in federal prison after being sentenced for distributing methamphetamine within the Southern District of West Virginia.

     On Monday, May 12, 2025, Robert Earl Cureton, Jr., also known as “Black Rob,” 40, of Detroit, Michigan, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia and was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Robert C. Chambers to 96 months in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to Distribution of Methamphetamine.

According To The U.S.Attorney’s Office

     According to Acting U.S. Attorney Lisa G. Johnston and charging documents filed with the District Court, on January 12, 2024, during an ongoing investigation into Cureton’s drug distribution activities, he sold around 54 grams of methamphetamine to a confidential informant while on the 2400 Block of Collis Avenue in Huntington, West Virginia. During his plea allocution, Cureton admitted to selling the methamphetamine and arranging the sale beforehand. 

     Cureton further admitted to selling around 18.6 grams of fentanyl in exchange for $1,300 on November 9, 2023, and around 55 grams of methamphetamine in exchange for $380 on December 7, 2023, each time to a confidential informant in and around the 2400 Block of Collis Avenue.

     On November 26, 2024, Cureton traveled by Greyhound bus from Detroit, Michigan, to Cincinnati, Ohio, and then took a rideshare from Cincinnati to Huntington, West Virginia. Cureton further admitted that he possessed a suitcase while traveling that contained just around 5.8 kilograms of methamphetamine. 

     Later that day, law enforcement investigators conducted a traffic stop on the rideshare vehicle in which Cureton was a passenger in the 900 Block of 7th Avenue in Huntington, West Virginia, and placed him under arrest on the current offense. Investigators seized the suitcase containing the methamphetamine and around $4,566 in Cureton’s pockets, in which Cureton admitted the cash was proceeds from selling methamphetamine.
