Elderly Jersey City Man Remains Hospitalized After Being Injured In Fire

JERSEY CITY, NJ.- A 97-year-old Jersey City, New Jersey, man remains hospitalized from burns after being rescued from his burning York Street basement apartment by Firefighters Thursday afternoon.

     According to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, on Thursday, May 15, 2025, just shortly after 1:30 p.m., members of the Jersey City Police Department and the Jersey City Fire Department responded to 911 Emergency Calls reporting an apartment fire located at 318 York Street in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Firefighters Find Elderly Man Severely Burned

     Upon arrival, First Responders observed heavy smoke and flames coming from a basement apartment. During fire suppression, Firefighters found a 97-year-old man who lived at the location, suffering from severe burns. The man was immediately transported to Jersey City Medical Center. He was later transported to Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center Burn Unit in Livingston, New Jersey, where he remains hospitalized in stable condition.

      The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force is actively investigating the origin and cause of the fire with assistance from the Jersey City Fire Department.
