New Brunswick Man Charged With Fatally Running Down Woman

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ.- On Sunday, a 41-year-old North Brunswick, New Jersey, man was taken into custody and charged in connection with fatally running down a 48-year-old New Brunswick, New Jersey woman late Saturday night in the City of New Brunswick.
According to Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone, on Saturday, May 24, 2025, just shortly after 10:30 p.m., members of the New Brunswick Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting a female pedestrian being struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Lee and Suydam Streets in the City of New Brunswick.
Police Officers Find Lying In Roadway Critically Injured
Upon arrival, Police Officers found a woman, later identified as Elvia Gavarrete, 48, of New Brunswick, New Jersey, lying in the roadway suffering from life-threatening injuries. Ms. Gavarrete was immediately transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where, despite life-saving efforts, Ms. Gavarrete tragically succumbed to her injuries and was tragically pronounced deceased a short time later.
During the initial investigation led by Officer Mark Smith of the Brunswick Police Department and Detective Shadi Zaiton of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, determined that a pickup truck driven by Juan Martinez-Gaspar, 41, of North Brunswick, New Jersey, struck Ms. Gavarrete at the intersection of Lee and Suydam Streets and fled the scene.
During the early morning hours on Sunday, the pickup truck was located with damage to the front end consistent with a pedestrian collision. Mr Martinez-Gasper was taken into custody without incident and formally charged with one count of second-degree Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death.
