Amsterdam Man Sentenced For Federal Narcotics Violation

ALBANY, NY.- A 36-year-old Amsterdam, New York man will be spending over the next seven years in federal prison after being sentenced on Wednesday for possessing over three kilograms of cocaine.

     According to U.S. Attorney John A. Sarcone, III, on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, Jose Carrero, 36, of Amsterdam, New York, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York and was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Mae A. D’Agostino to 87 months in federal prison, to be followed by four years of supervised release after pleading guilty to Possession of a Controlled Substance, Cocaine with Intent to Distribute.

According To The Charging Documents

     According to charging documents filed with the District Court, on November 4, 2024, during an ongoing federal narcotics investigation, Agents of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration arrested Carrero after observing him place three kilograms of cocaine into the trunk of his vehicle. 

     During the arrest procedure, Agents recovered $1,704 in cash on his person. A subsequent court-authorized search of Carrero’s Amsterdam, New York home led to the recovery of an additional 296 grams of cocaine and $70,000 in U.S. currency in denominations consistent with narcotics trafficking.

     As part of his plea agreement, Carrero agreed to forfeit the $70,000 in cash seized from his residence and the $1,704 in cash found on his person during his arrest.

     U.S. Attorney John A. Sarcone, III, stated, “Thanks to the hard work of our law enforcement partners, Amsterdam will be free of this major drug dealer for years.”
