Thursday, July 3, 2025, 9:45 A.M. ET. 2 Minute Read, By Art Fletcher: Englebrook Independent News,

ABERDEEN TOWNSHIP, NJ.- A 65-year-old Matawan, New Jersey, woman will be facing up to three years in New Jersey State Prison, after pleading guilty last Friday, to leaving the scene after running down a 58-year-old Aberdeen Township, New Jersey, woman in September of 2024.

According to Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago, on Friday, June 27, 2025, Sonia N. Gomez, 65, of Matawan, New Jersey, appeared in Monmouth County Superior Court and pleaded guilty before Superior Court Judge Joseph W. Oxley to one count of second-degree Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Collision Resulting in Death.

In return for the guilty plea, the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office will recommend that Gomez be sentenced to a three-year term in State Prison. Following entering her guilty plea on Friday, Judge Oxley accepted her plea and scheduled sentencing for August 14, 2025.

Guilty Plea Stems From An Investigation And Arrest

The guilty plea stems from an investigation that began on Wednesday, September 4, 2025, when shortly before 7:30 p.m., members of the Aberdeen Township Police Department responded to a report of a woman being struck by a motor vehicle at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and 2nd Street in the Township.

Upon arrival, Police Officers located a woman, later identified as Judith Fox-Hernandez, 58, of Aberdeen Township, in the roadway, suffering from multiple life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle that fled the scene. Ms. Fox-Hernandez was immediately transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where, despite life-saving efforts, Ms. Fox-Hernandez tragically succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased on Sunday, September 29, 2024.

Detectives Identify Gomez As The Driver Of The Vehicle

An ensuing investigation by the Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team, the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Bureau, and the Aberdeen Township Police Department determined that Ms. Fox-Hernandez was struck by a 2015 Honda Pilot, being operated by Gomez. Further, they determined that after striking Ms. Fox-Hernandez, Gomez fled the scene and did not report the collision to the Police.
