Police Charge Man In June’s Northeast, D.C. Shooting Investigation

WASHINGTON, DC.- On Friday, a 28-year-old Southwest, D.C., man was taken into custody and jailed after being charged in connection with firing a gunshot at a victim during a verbal dispute late last month in Northeast, D.C.
According to D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith, on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, just shortly after 4:30 p.m., members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department responded to a report of gunfire on the 1000 Block of 16th Street in Northeast, D.C.
Police Officers Learn That Shots Were Fired During A Dispute
Upon arrival, Police Officers were informed by witnesses that a dispute had occurred between two men on 16th Street, when one of the men pulled out a handgun and began firing at the other man. Both the victim and the suspect fled the area. During the initial investigation, Responding Police Officers determined that no one was injured in the shooting.
During the ensuing investigation, and following a review of area video surveillance footage, and based on the description provided by witnesses, Detectives were able to identify the shooter as Juwan Russell, 28, of Southeast, D.C., and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
On Friday, July 11, 2025, as a result of the investigation, Russell was located and taken into custody and formally charged with one count of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon. Russell was processed on the charge and was remanded to the D.C. Central Detention Facility, pending future court proceedings in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.
