Saturday, July 19, 2025, 9:15 A.M. ET. 3 Minute Read, By Art Fletcher: Englebrook Independent News,

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ.- On Tuesday, following an investigation, a 24-year-old Gloucester Township, New Jersey, man, who was apprehended in New York City, was charged in connection with fatally gunning down a 53-year-old Gloucester Township, New Jersey, man earlier this month, in the doorway of his apartment.

According to Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay, on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, Matthew Lucas, 24, of Gloucester Township, New Jersey, was criminally charged with first-degree Murder; second-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; and second-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose.

According To Information Filed In The Criminal Complaint

According to the charging information filed in the criminal complaint, on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, just minutes before 5:00 p.m., members of the Gloucester Township Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting a person being shot at the Lakeview Apartment complex located on the 500 Block of Lower Landing Road in the Township.

Upon arrival, Police Officers found Anthony Sanfilippo, 53, of Gloucester Township, New Jersey, lying in the doorway of his apartment, having succumbed to a gunshot wound. Mr Sanfilippo was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene.

Detectives Find Shell Casing

During the ensuing investigation, Detectives of the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit located a .45-caliber shell casing at the homicide scene. Detectives further learned from a witness that following the shooting, the suspect stole a vehicle from a witness at the apartment complex and fled the scene. The suspect was described as wearing a black surgical mask, a head garment with tassels, and green pants. Detectives also issued an alert for the vehicle.

New York Police Officers Arrest Lucas

On Sunday, July 13, 2025, members of the New York Police Department located the stolen vehicle on West 49th Street in New York City. Lucas was arrested one block away from the vehicle on an unrelated crime. During the arrest procedure, New York City Police Officers found the key to the stolen car on him and a .45-caliber handgun on his person. Additionally, at the time of his arrest, Lucas was wearing a black surgical mask and a head garment with tassels on it.

Subsequent ballistics testing on the firearm confirmed that the .45-caliber shell casing recovered at the homicide scene matched the handgun New York City Police Officers found on Lucas during his arrest. Additionally, green pants with suspected blood on them were recovered from the stolen car.

Lucas is currently being detained at Rikers Island in New York on a fugitive from justice warrant, pending extradition to New Jersey.

Anyone with additional information regarding the investigation into the shooting death of Mr. Sanfilippo is urged to contact Detective Tanner Ogilvie of the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office at (856) 580-5819 and Detective Daniel Ritz of the Gloucester Township Police Department at (856) 228-4500.
