Police Charge Man In Saturday Night Southeast D.C. Shooting Homicide

WASHINGTON, DC.- Early Sunday morning, July 26, 2025, a 46-year-old Woodbridge, Virginia, man was taken into custody and jailed after being charged in connection with gunning down two men, one fatally, late Saturday night in Southeast, D.C.
According to D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith, on Saturday, July 26, 2025, shortly before 11:30 p.m., members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s Seventh District responded to reports of a shooting on the 2700 Block of Martin Luther King Jr Avenue in Southeast, D.C.
Upon Arrival Police Officers Find Two Men Shot, One Fatally
Upon arrival, Police Officers located a man, later identified as Caly Hargrave, 55, of White Plains, Maryland, lying on the ground, having succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds. Responding Police Officers located a second man inside a store, suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services arrived on scene and pronounced Mr. Hargrave deceased at the scene. The second shooting victim was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Following an interview with witnesses on the scene, Detectives were able to issue an alert for the suspect. A short time later, while canvassing the surrounding area, Police Officers noticed a man matching the description that was provided by witnesses. Accordingly, Police Officers placed the man, identified as Charles Mitchell, Jr., 46, of Woodbridge, Virginia, under arrest.
Mitchell Was Formally Charged Early Sunday Morning
During the early morning hours of Sunday, July 27, 2025, and based on the Detectives’ investigation, Mitchell was formally charged with one count of second-degree Murder While Armed and related assault weapons offenses. Mitchell was processed on the charges and was remanded to the D.C. Central Detention Facility, pending future court proceedings in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.
