LODI, NJ.- On Monday, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office released an update on an apparent landlord-tenant dispute that occurred late Sunday night in the Borough of Lodi, New Jersey, which resulted in the fatal shooting of the tenant after he apparently broke into the landlord’s residence with a spear-like object.

According to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella, on Sunday, August 3, 2025, just shortly before 11:00 p.m., members of the Lodi Police Department responded to multiple 911 Emergency Calls reporting gunfire at a Garibaldi residence in the Borough of Lodi.

Upon Arrival, Police Officers Find A Man Suffering From A Gunshot Wound

Upon arrival, Police Officers and First Responders immediately located an unresponsive man, later identified as Amir Ali, 33, of Lodi, New Jersey, suffering from a gunshot wound. First Responders immediately rendered life-saving measures and transported Mr. Ali to Hackensack University Medical Center, where, despite life-saving efforts, Mr. Ali succumbed to his injury and was pronounced deceased upon arrival.

Detectives Learn The Victim Was A Tenant At The Residence

During the initial investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit Homicide Squad and the Lodi Police Department, Detectives uncovered that Mr. Ali was attempting to forcefully gain access to the front door of the Garibaldi Avenue residence, utilizing a spear-like object. After a failed attempt, Mr. Ali then tried to enter the residence by breaking a window.

At that time, the 62-year-old homeowner, who was inside the residence along with two other family members, confronted Mr. Ali and fired three shots at him, striking him once. Further investigation uncovered that Mr. Ali was a current tenant of the residence and lived in a basement apartment.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. As of Monday afternoon, no arrests have been made or charges filed.
