According to Acting U.S. Attorney Troy Rivetti and charging information unsealed in the indictment, on July 5, 2025, members of the Pittsburgh Police Department found Mitchell to be in possession of three firearms. A subsequent records check revealed that Mitchell had been convicted of two prior felonies, including state firearm charges.
Federal law prohibits a person with a prior felony conviction or a misdemeanor conviction for a domestic violence offense from owning or possessing a firearm and ammunition.
If Convicted On The Indictment Mitchell Faces Up To 15 Years In Federal Prison
If convicted at trial, Mitchell faces up to 15 years in federal prison, at least two years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. At sentencing, upon a finding of guilt, a U.S. District Court Judge would determine the term of imprisonment based on the circumstances surrounding the charge and Mitchell’s prior criminal history.
Acting U.S. Attorney Rivetti commended the investigative work of the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, which led to the indictment of Mitchell.

“The rules of the federal court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
