Police Charge Man In Last Month’s Jersey City Sexual Assault

JERSEY CITY, NJ.- On Friday, a 35-year-old Jersey City, New Jersey, man was taken into custody and jailed after being charged in connection with the alleged brutal sexual assault of a woman that occurred during the evening hours of Saturday, July 26, 2025, as the woman was entering her Jersey City home.

     According to Acting Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello, on Friday, July 8, 2025, Richard Murphy, 35, of Jersey City, New Jersey, was formally charged with first-degree Aggravated Sexual Assault; second-degree Burglary; third-degree Aggravated Assault. Murphy was taken into custody at Jersey City Medical Center by Detectives of the Hudson County Special Victims Unit and the Hudson County Regional S.W.A.T. Unit.

Woman Reports To Police She Was Assaulted Entering Her Home

     On Saturday, July 26, 2025, just shortly after 11:30 p.m., members of the Jersey City Police Department responded to a report of a sexual assault on Sussex Street in downtown Jersey City. Upon arrival, Police Officers located a woman who informed Police Officers that an unknown man had physically and sexually assaulted her as she was entering her home. The woman was transported to Jersey City Medical Center for treatment of her injuries and is continuing to recover at home.

     During the ensuing investigation, Detectives of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit and the Jersey City Police Department were able to develop information and evidence that led to Murphy being identified as the suspect.
