HUNTINGTON, W.VA. A 39-year-old Charleston, West Virginia, man and a local Charleston drug dealer escaped a lengthy prison term after being sentenced on Monday to less than a year in federal prison for attempting to distribute a kilogram of fentanyl within the Charleston, West Virginia, area.
According to Acting U.S. Attorney Lisa G. Johnston, on Monday, August 11, 2025, Jaron Andrew O’Neil, 39, of Charleston, West Virginia, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia and was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Robert C. Chambers to six months in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, after pleading guilty to Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance, Fentanyl.
According To Charging Documents Filed With The District Court
According to court documents, Investigators obtained and executed a court-authorized search warrant on a package that was addressed to a Barboursville, West Virginia, address after a K9 positively alerted to potential narcotics. During the search of the package, Investigators found one kilogram of fentanyl. Following the discovery, Investigators replaced the fentanyl with a facsimile substance and conducted a controlled delivery of the package to the Barboursville address.
On January 24, 2023, O’Neil picked up the package, placed the package in his vehicle, and drove away. Investigators conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and located the package inside. During O’Neal’s arrest, he told Investigators that he retrieved the package, believing that it contained controlled substances.
Acting U.S. Attorney Johnston commended the investigative work of the United States Postal Inspection Service, which resulted in the successful prosecution of O’Neil.
