Police Charge Man In Saturday Afternoon Southeast Shooting

WASHINGTON, DC.- A 21-year-old Southeast, D.C., man was taken into custody and jailed after being charged for his role in a shooting that occurred during the afternoon hours of Saturday in Southeast, D.C., leaving a man hospitalized.
According to D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith, on Saturday, August 16, 2025, just shortly after 4:30 p.m., members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department responded to reports of gunfire on the 2200 Block of Minnesota Avenue in Southeast, D.C.
Police Officers Find Man Shot
Upon arrival, Police Officers located a victim, suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The victim was immediately transported by DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services to a nearby hospital for treatment. During the initial investigation, Responding Police Officers learned that two suspects and the victim were having a conversation on Minnesota Avenue. During the conversation, one of the suspects pulled out a handgun and fired at the victim, and then the two fled the scene in a vehicle.
Detectives Were Able To Identify One Of The Suspects
During the ensuing investigation, based on a description provided by the victim, Detectives were able to identify one of the suspects as Corneal Smith, 21, of Southeast, D.C.
Accordingly, as a result of the Detectives’ investigation, Smith was located and taken into custody and formally charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and related Weapons offenses. He was processed on the charges and was remanded to the D.C. Central Detention Facility pending future court proceedings in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.
The investigation remains active and ongoing as Detectives continue their search for the second suspect.
