Police Charge Man In April Southeast Fatal Shooting

WASHINGTON, DC.- Last Thursday, a 30-year-old Washington, D.C., man was taken into custody and jailed after being charged in connection with the targeted shooting death of a 22-year-old man that occurred earlier this year in Southeast, D.C.

     According to D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith, on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, shortly after 6:30 p.m., members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s Seventh District responded to multiple reports of a shooting on the 2900 Block of Knox Place in Southeast, D.C.

Police Officers Find Man Fatally Shot On The Street

     Upon arrival, Police Officers found a man, later identified as Dar’juan McRoy, 22, of Southeast, D.C., unresponsive, on the ground, having succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds. Mr. McRoy was pronounced deceased at the scene by DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services. 

     During the ensuing investigation, Detectives were able to identify Tarik Settles, 30, of Southeast, D.C., as the shooter and the individual responsible for the premeditated shooting death of Mr. McRoy, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. On Thursday, August 14, 2025, pursuant to the DC Superior Court warrant, Settles was taken into custody by members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force and formally charged with one count of first-degree Murder While Armed and related Weapons offenses.

     Settles was processed on the charges and was remanded to the D.C. Central Detention Facility pending future court proceedings in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
