Man Wanted In Burlington City Fatal Shooting Arrested In Virginia

BURLINGTON CITY, NJ.- A 33-year-old Burlington County, New Jersey, man wanted in connection with fatally gunning down a 38-year-old Burlington City, New Jersey, man back in early June in the City’s Yorkshire neighborhood, was taken into custody last Friday in Roanoke, Virginia.

     According to LaChia L. Bradshaw, James H. McDowell, Jr., 33, of Burlington City, New Jersey, has been formally charged with one count of first-degree Murder; second-degree Certain Persons Not to Possess Weapons; second-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; and second-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose.

McDowell Was Apprehended On Friday In Roanoke Virginia

     McDowell was taken into custody on Friday, August 15, 2025, by members of the U.S. Marshals Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, the U.S. Marshals Service Western District of Virginia, Roanoke Office, and the Roanoke Police Department. McDowell was processed on the charges and lodged in the Roanoke City Adult Detention Center pending extradition to New Jersey.

     The charges stem from an investigation that began on June 8, 2025, when, just shortly after 5:30 a.m., members of the Burlington City Police Department responded to reports of gunfire in the area of Earl and Clarkson Streets in the City of Burlington. Upon arrival, Police Officers found a man, identified as Derrick Adams, 38, of Burlington City, unresponsive on the ground, having succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds. Mr. Adams was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene.

     During the ensuing investigation, Detectives of the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office and the Burlington City Police Department, with assistance from the Willingboro Police Department, were able to identify McDowell as the suspect and the individual responsible for the shooting death of Mr. Adams.
