PATERSON, NJ.- A 41-year-old Paterson, New Jersey, man learned he will be facing up to life in New Jersey State Prison when sentenced later this year after being convicted on Thursday for the fatal shooting of a 62-year-old Paterson, New Jersey, man that occurred last spring in the City of Paterson.

According to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes, on Thursday, August 21, 2025, following nearly a month-long trial in Passaic County Superior Court before Superior Court Judge Joy-Michele Johnson, a jury found Jimmy Mercedes, 41, of Paterson, New Jersey, guilty of first-degree Murder; second-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; second-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose. The jury also found Mercedes guilty of second-degree Certain Persons Not to Possess Weapons.

Mercedes Is Facing Up To Life In State Prison

Following the jury returning their findings of guilt, Judge Johnson accepted the verdict and scheduled sentencing for October 28, 2025. At that time, Mercedes faces a mandatory minimum of 30 years and up to life in New Jersey State Prison. Mercedes will face an additional consecutive 10 years in State Prison for his conviction of certain persons not to possess weapons.

The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office presented evidence that proved beyond a reasonable doubt that during the mid-morning hours on May 5, 2024, shot Daryle Robinson, 62, twice, in the area of Broadway and East 24th Street in the City of Paterson. Mr. Robinson succumbed to his injuries at Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center on May 7, 2024.

Portions of the events preceding and subsequent to the shooting were captured on area surveillance video, including Mercedes leaving the area. On May 10, 2024, Mercedes was taken into custody and formally charged.
