Police Charge Man In May 2025, Northeast, D.C. Shooting Death

WASHINGTON, DC.- Last Friday, a 62-year-old Washington, D.C., man was taken into custody and jailed after being charged in connection with fatally gunning down a 61-year-old inside a Northeast, D.C. apartment in May 2025.

     According to D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith, on Friday, May 2, 2025, shortly before 1:00 p.m., members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s Fifth District responded to reports of a shooting on the 600 Block of 21st Street in Northeast, D.C.

     Upon arrival, Police Officers located a man, later identified as Steven Stewart, 61, of Northeast, D.C., unresponsive, inside an apartment, having succumbed to gunshot wounds. Mr. Stewart was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene by DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services. 

     During the ensuing investigation, Detectives were able to identify Phillip Palmer, 62, of Northeast, D.C., as the shooter, and the case was presented to a District of Columbia Grand Jury, which returned an indictment charging Palmer in connection with the death of Mr. Stewart, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Palmer Was Arrested Last Friday, On Grand Jury Indictment

     Accordingly, on Friday, August 22, 2025, members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s Sixth District, along with Homicide Branch Detectives, located and arrested Palmer pursuant to the D.C. Superior Court warrant. Following being taken into custody, Palmer was formally charged with first-degree Murder While Armed. Palmer was processed on the charge and was remanded to the D.C. Central Detention Facility pending future court proceedings in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.
